About Janys

Janys M. Murphy Rising (she/they) is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Olympia, Washington with two decades of experience. Her counseling modalities include Psychodynamic Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. She is certified as a yoga teacher, yoga therapist, and an Enneagram teacher. Janys uses their experience with The Enneagram which supports clients and students to understanding internal motivations and teaches in small group settings. Janys also has knowledge about astrology, the tarot, and shamanic practices for healing. Janys is committed to teaching clients to deepen knowledge about patterns in their life that support them in being spontaneous, in the here and now, and learning through the counseling relationship to be the person they were born to be.

Dr. Murphy Rising’s credentials include a Doctorate in Counselor Education (Ph.D.), a Mental Health Counselor License, (LMHC), Substance Use Disorder Professional (SUDP), and Child Mental Health Specialist (CMHS). Janys is also a qualified Clinical Supervisor of post-masters’ candidates in pursuit of licensing. They have over a decade of experience teaching graduate level counselors.

 

Janys works with concerns such as adolescent transitions, developmental trauma, substance use, eating disorders—including binge eating (informed by intuitive eating and an anti-diet approach), depression, anxiety, grief, and loss—spirituality and life transitions, codependency, gifted adults and children, and chronic illness. Janys is also an adult sibling of a person living with a disability, and enjoys working with other siblings and family members.

 

Janys is a dynamic public speaker and is happy to be approached for speaking engagements. Some specialty topics include working with adolescents with co-occurring disorders, motivational interviewing and clinical supervision, the enneagram and addiction, yoga and compassion fatigue (her dissertation topic), and working with adolescent trauma and healing.

In her spare time, Janys enjoys gardening, practicing German, yoga, being outdoors, and spending time with her spouse and their cats.
